Green Tea and Disability in Older Persons

Daily intake of green tea lowers the risk of functional disability in older people says a report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Nearly 14,000 men and women were studied in Japan. Green, oolong and black tea consumption was compared. Those who drank two cups of green tea per day were 10% less likely to become disabled than those who drank less than two cups of green tea a day. Five cups of green tea per day caused a 33% lower risk of disability. Those drinking the most green tea had a much lower incidence of cognitive inpairment, stroke and even osteoporosis.

More than 775,000 people were interviewed and 42% who claimed to be "very religious"--defined as high church attendance and high importance of faith in their daily lives--reported a higher overall well-being than the general population but also were more likely not to smoke and more likely to exercise regularly.

These findings dovetail with extensive research published by psychologist , Dr, Norman Anderson, in his book "Emotional Longevity." Dr. Anderson describes how good relationships are a buffer against everything from heart disease to the common cold and that religious obsevance often goes hand in hand with longevity. He also demonstrates that far more than genetics, diet, or exercise alone, real health and longevity also includes a person's friendships and beliefs of which many are dependent on religous upbringing and religious obsevance that ultimately help the individual find meaning in life.

FDA says walnuts are illegal drugs

Walnuts have been eaten by humans since the old stoneage and have never been found to be harmful to anyone. Even so, the FDA, which pretends to protect the public recently proclaimed that walnuts are an illegal drug. Moreover, I know of at least 50 published scientific studies that describe the health benefits of walnuts. None of this seems to matter to the bureaucrats at the FDA. You see there is a law on the books that was passed to protect big pharma from any competition from food or supplement manufacturers that says no health claims can be made no matter how much research has been done to prove health benefits of any product that is not a drug the FDA has passed judgement on. So because Diamond Foods has made some claims as to the health benefits of their walnuts, FDA says the walnuts are misbranded and "are not generally recognized as safe and effective." They are also "subject to seizure or injunction" by our government.

Have you ever wondered why drugs are so expensive or why doctors always yank out their prescription pad to prescribe a costly powerful, and often dangerous drug when folks make a routine visit. No thought is ever given to cheaper more conservative alternatives because of the nonsense I have just described. FDA does not protect you. It actually protects the drug industry from real competition which deprives you of effective often cheaper alternatives and harms the economy by making healthcare more expensive.

Alkalize for Optimal Health.

One of the greatest but least recognized benefits of eating lots of fruits and vegetables is their ability to prevent osteoporosis or bone loss which comes as we age. Studies have proven that people who eat the most fruits and vegetables had the strongest bones due to high mineral density. More than 100 studies have confirmed this finding.

What seems to be most important, however, is how much calcium you excrete in your urine every day. Diets high in acid containing foods will cause you become acidic which causes greater excretion of calcium and promotes bone loss, so acid-base balance is very important since if you are alkaline calcium is retained not excreted. Diets high in fruits and vegetables, especially leafy green vegetables and brightly colored vegetables are alkaline. Diets high in salt, meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and cereals are all on the acid side. So in order not to lose too much calcium you must balance this type of diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

One of the best, if not the bes,t diet to follow which produces a healthy acid-base balance is the Paleo Diet which I have written about in previous blogs.

If you are interested in receiving my free e-newsletter write me at sr.seater1941@yahoo.com .

40% OF CANCERS BLAMED ON LIFESTYLE

40 % of cancers in women and 45% in men could be prevented by healthier lifestyles. Recent research in the UK has revealed that most cancers are caused by just four lifestyle factors- - smoking, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, and being overweight. Smoking alone accounts for 23% of all cancers in Britain in men and roughly 16% in women. Cancers of the lungs, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and cervix are attributable to this one activity.

In men, 6.1% of cancers were linked to a lack of fresh fruits and non starchy vegetables in the diet. Behind these four lifestyle causes is promiscuity which causes men and women to contract the human pappiloma virus (HPV) that often leads to cervical, and prostate cancer. Another rapidly growing class of cancers is connected with the kind of work people do for a living. At least one in 25 diagnosed cancers is work-related.

This material was reported by the United Press International 01-25-12.

More on the Paleolithic Diet

My last two blogs talked about the whys and hows of the hunter/gatherer diet.

In this blog I want to clear up some misunderstandings. The Paleolithic Diet always is concerned with foods we humans have adapted to through prolonged esposure. There are three distinct metabolic types this diet covers: the Protein/fat type, carbohydrate type, and the mixed or omnivorous type. This diet regardless of your type is centered upon eating foods our ancestors ate and avoiding those foods that recently entered the human diet such as grains, legumes, potatoes, sugar, white flour, artificial sweeteners, transfats, and all prepared foods (modified foods like TV dinners, packaged snacks,etc.). All of us are adapted to one form or another of this primal diet. Genetic anthropology has proven this and also that in the last 50,000 years our genetics have changed very little compared to our Paleolithic ancestors. The hard cold truth is that much of what we eat is not suitable for our genetic makeup.

There is also no doubt that humans evolved as omnivores who need animal products in their diet. However, the amount of animal products varies with your metabolic type. Carbohydrate types can get by with the least amount of animal products in the diet. They are best suited to adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, but only if they take supplements or ocassionally eat animal products. Most of us need plenty of high quality protein in our diet to avoid age-related muscle loss and strength loss. Only animal products like meat and fish contain high quality protein. Meat, even lots of it, and high fat intake have not been liked to disease. According to Fossel, Blackburn, and Woynarowski, authors of the authoritative new book The Immortality Edge "To date there has been no study linking red meat uniquivocally to any disease process."In fact the entire lipid hypothesis that most doctors rely on to prescribe cholesterol lowering drugs is not valid according to Walter Willet, MD, PHD at Harvard Medical School, who happens to also be the most quoted doctor in the medical literature.

Lastly, I want to mention salt as another substance to avoid in your diet. Never add salt to your food. Salt contributes to hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Many people are addicted to it and heavily salt their food. Don't do it.

The Paleolithic Diet Continued

In my last blog I talked about the hunter/gatherer diet, sometimes referred to as the Primal Diet or the Paleolithic Diet because it originated during the Paleolithic period of geological time which ended about 10,000 BC when the great ice sheets melted. In general the paleolithic diet consists of the natural foods found in the geographic areas in which our ancestors lived and evolved. Because the foods found in these areas vary considerably, different diets evolved in various parts of the world. All of these foods were eaten prior to the great agricultural revolution which occured in relatively recent times a few thousand years ago.

Recent studies by geneticists, biochemists, nutritionists and other investigators have found that there are three metabolic types: the protein/fat type, the carbohydrate type, and the mixed type which is a combination of the other types. The Protein/fat type requires an abundance of meat, fish and eggs in the diet. Eskimos are the most extreme example in this category. The traditional Eskimo diet consists of large amounts of fish, whale and seal meat, including lots of blubber and very little plant life other than seaweed. The Masai of East Africa, also follow a high protein/fat diet which consists of lots of beef, raw milk, and blood from their cattle. They consume, on average, about a pound of butter fat every day. Neither the Masai nor the Eskimos have any cardiovascular disease as you might expect if you believe the so-called lipid hypothesis which says fats are a risk factor for heart disease.

The carbohydrate type is characterized by eating a diet low in animal protein and very high in fruits and vegetables, roots, and even bark and plenty of tree nuts and seeds. East Indian people are well adapted to this diet. However, even these people must on occasion eat some animal products like eggs, fish or yogurt because a purely vegetarian diet does not contain all the amino acids required for the human body to make needed protein. It also lacks the best form of iron and Vitamin B 12. Supplementation is required for anyone who wishes not to ever eat animal products.

The third metabolic type is the mixed type, usually thought of as omnivorous type. In truth nearly all human populations are at least somewhat omnivorous even the most extreme types. There are subtle gradations between the three types. I am a mixed type but lean toward being a protein type. Another mixed type may lean toward being a carbohydrate type and so on.

Mixed types can eat a wide variety of food, but should attempt to consume natural unrefined foods and stay away from grains, potatoes, especially french fries, refined sugars, flour and other man made or man altered foods. This would include trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, various flavor enhancers and artificial sweeteners. In general, sweets are worse for protein/fat types, not good for mixed types and even hamfull for carbohydate types because refined sugar is new to the human diet and the simple fact is we are not well adapted to it. In fact in most humans refined sugar is addicting. Why else are so many people absolutely hooked on sweets?

You should strive to eat a diet according to your metabolic type. How will you know what your type is? Get typed by completing a test and having it graded. Call me if you are interested at 240-888-5453. Eating according to your type is essential. Why do you think a man at 50 years of age develops heart trouble when someone else 20 years older who eats similarly does not. The answer is the younger person is following a diet not suited to his type.

Because metabolic testing has shown that most Americans are mixed types I offer the following advice on eating:

1) Eat plenty of animal protein every day including meat, poultry, fish, shell fish, and eggs. Eat dairy food sparingly or not at all.

2) Eat leafy green and brightly colored vegetables, preferably raw but cooked is ok as long as you eat more raw than cooked.

3) Eat plenty of fiberous fruits and some tree nuts.

4)Avoid refined sugar, white flour and most everything made with it.

5)Be sure to eat foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids like cold water fish, flax seeds or flax meal.

6) Avoid all trans fats, hygrogenated, partially hydrogenated fats. Use Extra virgin olive oil in salads, cook with coconut oil and saute with butter or gee.

7) Drink coffee, green tea, white tea or black tea instead of fruit juices, soft drinks, or milk.

8) Consume alcohol in small quantities always with food, red wine and dark beer are best.

For vegetarians I have a recommended diet. Call me for it.
